Today, travelers take it for granted that a hand towel and bath towel is provided in their accommodation. In some countries, including Germany, terry towels are even mandatory as soon as owners undergo an official classification, so called DEHOGA in Germany: In establishments with one star, one bath towel per person must be provided; from two stars upwards, one towel and one bath towel per guest are required. Even the travel platform AirBnB advises landlords to provide at least one towel per guest.  

Guest towels are indispensable in the bathroom!  

These guidelines and recommendations are easy to see: It is almost not possible to dry your hands without terry towels. Wherever your wet body walks and stands, you will cause water stains on the floor.  

A visit to the spa literally falls through if you don't have a way to dry yourself and all around. You can't go to the beach or pool without one either: if you want to enjoy sunbathing, a terry towel fulfills a variety of functions: It dries you off, protects you from too much sun and serves as a soft cover on the lounger.   

Which kind of terry linen do you need in a hotel?  

In principle, there are no limits to how hoteliers can equip their hotel bathrooms with terry towels. Guests feel appreciated finding a bathmat in addition to a shower towel and hand towel. After all, guests want to be able to leave the shower safely i.e. without slipping. Bathmats make a lot of sense and lend a lot of sensuality. Simple mats form a warming barrier against cold tiles and absorb annoying dripping water. Full-bodied bathmats make your feet good and can provide an additional massaging effect. Budget-oriented accommodations save a little money by replacing the bathmat with a towel but will reap little appreciation for it.    

In bathrooms and toilets, face towels in size 30x30cm and the slightly larger guest towels in size 30x50 cm are still the best choice when it comes to attentive comfort and personal hygiene. In hotels with an international clientele, they have another function: they are placed near the bidet.  

However, the handy facial and guest towels are also misused for polishing shoes, removing make-up, cleaning and much more, which makes for less amusement in the laundry. 

Which kind of hand towels belong in spa and wellness areas?  

When visiting the spa area, hotel guests should be offered large sauna towels and bathrobes, for many good reasons. Slippers may provide a pleasant surplus. All articles can be handed out either in the hotel room or directly in the wellness oasis. Visitors can help themselves which some take a little too literally: An overview published in Businesstraveler.de in 2017 shows that in Germany and Switzerland, bathrobes disappear invisibly from the hotel room by up to 15%; slippers are even more 'popular' with a loss rate of 32%. 

Toweling as a souvenir  

Terry towels are highly popular with guests. Good advice to reduce shrinkage caused by thieving guests: Turn necessity into virtue and offer your guests the opportunity to legally purchase towels and bathrobes, at best embroidered with the hotel logo, made onto guest slippers, on sauna towels and noble bathrobes. A convincing functional and clearly calculable solution to protect oneself against unwelcome loss would be the insertion of RFID transponders. This method requires the installation of control gates in the entrance area of the hotel as well as in the laundry, of course, with unpleasant consequences for thieves: As soon as he passes through the control gate, the alarm siren blares.
